We Grow our Minds Alongside our Market Share
At The Cincinnati Insurance Companies, we believe in putting relationships first and doing business the right way. It’s why we’ve always been selective in our choice of agents, and why we’ve always taken care to recruit and hire the best associates.
Our commitment to building the best team possible for our policyholders doesn’t end with onboarding a new hire or appointing a new agency. Insurance is a constantly changing field in an ever-changing world, and we have to be ready to meet those new challenges as they arise. We consistently invest in education and tools to make sure our people are the best they can be.
An emphasis on education
Business was booming for The Cincinnati Insurance Company in the late 1950s. Gross premiums soared more than eightfold between 1955 and 1960 as we launched new products and entered new states.
The increasing number of claims that resulted required a growing number of associates to process them. And with adjusters increasingly spread far afield from the home office, from Florida to Michigan to Arizona, it was no longer enough to simply hire to fill the gaps. These new team members needed to be taught “the Cincinnati way.”
Training programs began in the 1950s. But as the company continued to grow, so did efforts to cultivate our people. We believe strongly in promoting from within, so we began to cover the cost of insurance education and certification courses for associates. In 1974, we set up a formal education and training program, offering associates not only insurance courses but also self-improvement classes like letter-writing. In the 1980s, we added adjuster and underwriting schools, and this tradition of encouraging lifelong learning continues today.
An academy for agents
Those efforts did not stop at the front door of our home office. Cincinnati has always relied on independent agents to sell its products and represent it in local communities. From the beginning, we’ve sought out and accepted only the very best agencies. In 1974, we launched a series of formal programs to make them even better.
The first Young Agent’s School was held in Cincinnati in September 1974. During the session, 11 new agents from three states learned about everything from basic insurance to Cincinnati’s cutting-edge combined homeowner’s-car insurance package policy. The importance we placed on education was underlined by the number of senior executives participating, including co-founder and then-president John J. Schiff, Sr. (Jack).
The first Advanced Agent’s School followed the next month, and soon agents from around the country were coming to Cincinnati to participate. Programs, like the first commercial life insurance seminar in 1975, were constantly added and revised to keep agents on the cutting edge.
For us, investing in the next generation of agents and providing world-class continuing education has never been about pushing products or collecting premiums. It’s always been about growing with our agency customers and building a stronger independent agency system, one class at a time. It’s about broadening their offerings and their horizons, celebrating their independence while ensuring they’re never alone.
Today, the Cincinnati Agency Academy offers 14 different academies, internships, programs, seminars and workshops, both in person around the country and online. In addition, the Agency Leadership Institute helps our agency customers with strategic and succession planning that allows them to remain independent. It’s all in service of our goal to provide the educational resources agencies need to succeed in the rapidly changing insurance industry of the 21st century.
As The Cincinnati Insurance Companies celebrates 75 years of being A Bridge to Better, we honor our legacy of putting agents first, our noble industry, and our commitment to meeting the ever-evolving needs of policyholders.
